At-Home Edition: Sunday, Sept. 6

Check out what’s happening today for the Minnesota State Fair: At-Home Edition here and on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube pages!

Friends of the Fair Day

Today at the fair would have been Friends of the Fair Day! On this day, we celebrate the Minnesota State Fair Foundation’s mission to preserve and improve State Fair buildings, the fairgrounds and educational programs for generations to come. You can be a part of that mission by becoming an official Friend of the Fair! In a year without a fair and without 95% of our revenue, your membership helps support the Minnesota State Fair Foundation in enriching the unforgettable memories and traditions that are made here at the Minnesota State Fair. Learn more about how to become a Friend of the Fair.

The Minnesota State Fair Foundation is also bringing the fair to you through a 12-day online silent auction, presented by By The Yard, now through Sept. 7. The auction features fun State Fair items and experiences you can’t get anywhere else and supports the Foundation’s mission to preserve and improve State Fair programs, buildings and the fairgrounds. Check out the auction items, and place your bids now.

Minnesota State Fair Benches

Lucas Riley was surprised with a bench from her husband through the Minnesota State Fair Foundation’s recognition bench program.

Listen to her tell her story!

The Minnesota State Fair Foundation provides donors with a way to commemorate a special person, treasured occasion, or their overwhelming love of the State Fair by placing personalized bricks, benches and tables on the fairgrounds. Donors have added more than 1,000 benches to the fairgrounds, improving seating options and providing special memories for many fair guests each year.

You can add your story to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds by ordering a brick, bench or table.

The Sioux Chef® Presents Indigenous Food Lab at Dan Patch Park

Making its State Fair debut on this day in 2019, The Sioux Chef® Presents Indigenous Food Lab at Dan Patch Park brought to center stage incredible culinary demonstrations by Indigenous chefs dedicated to the (r)evolution and revitalization of Native American cuisine. Fair fans were treated to delectable samples of specially prepared food, performances by traditional drummers and singers, and conversations with special guests. This daylong exploration of Indigenous culinary traditions was led by Chef Sean Sherman, co-author of The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, winner of the prestigious James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook in 2018.

University of Minnesota Marching Band

The University of Minnesota Marching Band performs in the State Fair Parade the second Sunday of the fair annually. We appreciate the energy they bring to the route and can’t wait to see them in 2021. Ski-U-Mah!

Check out this highlight reel!

Driven to Discover

The University of Minnesota’s Driven to Discover is a research facility on the fairgrounds featuring collaboration between researchers and thousands of fair guests. Guests can participate as part of a research study and meet with researchers and learn about their work. Stop by next year and be part of important studies!

Check out this overview video about the unique exhibit.

History Highlight

In 1949, the government granted monies to build a new Hippodrome (Warner Coliseum) after it was unfit for reconversion when turned into a World War II airplane propeller plant. That was the last year of government appropriations and the Minnesota State Fair has not received state funding since. In 2002, the Minnesota State Fair Foundation was founded to help fund Agricultural Education, Arts and Culture, Education, Fairgrounds Environment, and History and Heritage. Since 2006, the Foundation offices have been housed in the J.V. Bailey House – first built in 1911 for use as the Officers’ Quarters, then a full-time residence for the greenhouse superintendent from 1916-2004.
