4-H Livestock departments include:

  • Beef and Dairy Cattle
  • Dairy and Meat Goats
  • Poultry (chickens, ducks, geese, guineas, doves, turkeys, pigeons)
  • Rabbits
  • Sheep
  • Swine
  • Lamas (show during the Open Class Llamas Show)

The 4-H program offers programming throughout the 12 days of the Minnesota State Fair, serving more than 5,500 exhibitors and showcasing building exhibits, demonstrations, Share the Fun programs, County Arts In programs and other opportunities for youth participation.

Other 4-H contests include Herdsmanship, Showmanship, Judging Teams, Public Presentations, Non-Livestock Exhibits and County Club exhibits.

The 4-H premium book is available annually to view and print in early June. For more information, please contact your local 4-H leader, Extension agent or the state’s Center for 4-H Youth Development for further details.

Minnesota State Fair Beginning Exhibitor Livestock Learning Experience (BELLE) Grant

The Minnesota State Fair is committed to showcasing our state’s finest agriculture, and we recognize the importance of cultivating youth experiences in the livestock industry. We also understand that exhibiting at the Minnesota State Fair can stretch the family budget. Thanks to support from the Minnesota State Fair Foundation, we are proud to introduce the Minnesota State Fair Beginning Exhibitor Livestock Learning Experience (BELLE) Grant awarded to exhibitors who commit to participating in the Minnesota State Fair for the first time in 2021. The State Fair is also seeking peer-to-peer mentors to help guide BELLE participants. Learn more about BELLE Grant today!

The Minnesota State Fair Scholarship and Christensen Family Scholarship

The Minnesota State Fair is invested in the educational endeavors of young adults from greater Minnesota. The Minnesota State Fair Scholarship was established in 1994 and awards 20 scholarships of $1,000 each. Since its inception, more than $500,000 has been awarded. Additionally, Christensen Farms, one of the largest family-owned pork producers in the nation, has made available an additional $1,000 scholarship called the Christensen Family Scholarship. These scholarships will be made available to rural youth or those enrolled in an agriculture program in 2020-21. The application process for either the Minnesota State Fair Scholarship or the Christensen Family Scholarship is the same and must be submitted online. Please read the instructions before applying. Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase

The 12th annual Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase awarded more than $37,000 to 25 deserving youth in 2020.

Minnesota 4-H Purple Ribbon Auction

In 2019, the 41st annual Minnesota 4-H Purple Ribbon Auction raised more than $750,000 benefiting 4-H youth in the form of premiums and scholarships.
