TLC

TLC is the best-selling American girl group of all time and has spent over three decades breaking boundaries and empowering generations. The TLC story is one of sisterhood, strength and survival against the odds, having overcome extraordinary circumstances to become one of the most influential acts in pop music.

Their unique combination of chemistry, cultural impact and commercial success remains unmatched, with four multiplatinum albums and No. 1 singles and over 30 major music awards – including five Grammys. TLC has sold over 85 million records globally, reaching No. 1 in almost every major country in the world. Their journey encompasses immortal anthems such as “Waterfalls,” “Creep,” “No Scrubs” and “Unpretty.”

When “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes founded TLC in the early ‘90s, they immediately broke new ground. The Atlanta trio’s 1992 debut, “Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip,” landed a new blend of R&B and rap in the charts and marked TLC as a band with a message, with their baggy clothing and songs about female pleasure. “CrazySexyCool” followed in 1994 and took TLC stratospheric. It sold a staggering 23 million copies worldwide and, with “Waterfalls,” sensitively tackled issues like the AIDS crisis and gang violence. It was the first video from a female group to win Video of the Year at the MTV Music Awards.

On 1999’s “Fanmail,” TLC mapped out a vision of a post-millennium world with their futuristic take on R&B. The album featured another timeless classic “No Scrubs,” as well as T-Boz’s self-penned empowerment song “Unpretty.” TLC laid the blueprint for the American girl band, setting the stage for the groups that followed. Beyonce said: “TLC has influenced just about every female group that’s out there now, and they definitely influenced Destiny’s Child.” Missy Elliott says of TLC that they are “Legends. Icons. They will go down in the history books.”

Today, the group’s influence is everywhere from hip-hop to K-pop: Artists such as Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Kelahni, Tinashe, Rihanna, Arnie Lennox and BLACKPINK all credit TLC as an inspiration, or have referenced them in their visuals. And their cultural impact continues to extend beyond music: TLC’s unconventional approach to style has inspired artists in every field, as has their fearless representation of femininity and self-expression across the decades.

Salt-N-Pepa

From Queens to global rap royalty Salt-N-Pepa – the groundbreaking duo of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton – has forever changed the face and sound of hip-hop. Breaking barriers at every level, they became the first all-female rap group to earn platinum certification and later the first female hip-hop group – and the first group of any genre – inducted under the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s prestigious Influence category.

Emerging during hip-hop’s golden era, Salt-N-Pepa brought fun, fashion and unapologetic femininity to a genre often dominated by men. With their fearless lyrics, infectious energy, signature confidence and “around the way” authenticity, they paved the way for generations of women in music and beyond and gave women permission to be bold, expressive and empowered.

The duo’s story began in New York City, where Salt, from Brooklyn, and Pepa, born in Jamaica and raised in Queens, met while attending Queensborough Community College. Their chemistry caught the attention of producer Hurby “LuvBug” Azor, who created their first single, “The Showstopper.” Soon joined by Deidra “Spinderella” Roper, a DJ from Brooklyn who became one of the most celebrated female DJs in hip-hop, Salt-N-Pepa quickly became a cultural force.

Their 1986 debut album, “Hot, Cool & Vicious,” introduced the world to the anthem “Push It,” a track that became an instant classic and propelled the album to multiplatinum status. They followed with “A Salt with a Deadly Pepa” (1988) and “Blacks’ Magic” (1990), which delivered empowering anthems like “Expression,” “Independent” and “Let’s Talk About Sex.”

In 1993, their blockbuster album “Very Necessary” became one of the best-selling rap albums of all time by a female group, featuring timeless hits “Shoop,” “Whatta Man” (feat. En Vogue) and “None of Your Business.” The latter earned them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995, making them the first women in hip-hop to win in that category.

More than three decades after breaking barriers in hip-hop, Salt-N- Pepa’s cultural influence remains indelible. Over the years, they’ve received countless accolades – most recently a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2021), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2022) and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2025).

En Vogue

En Vogue is one of the most successful and influential female vocal groups in modern music history – and remains a powerful brand nearly four decades after their debut. With over 20 million records sold worldwide, seven studio albums, six No. 1 R&B singles, multiple Grammy nominations, American Music Awards, Soul Train Awards and three MTV VMAs, En Vogue ranks among Billboard’s Top 10 Most Successful Girl Groups of All Time. Across their catalog, En Vogue has consistently delivered crossover success, international chart performance and enduring radio staples. Today, original members Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis and Maxine Jones continue to headline major national and international events, including the 2025 NBA All-Star Game in San Francisco and the 2025 Glastonbury Festival.
