Extra-perceptive fair guests will notice that the exterior of the 85-year-old 4-H Building boasts brand-new windows and extensive exterior repair and paint work. Next up: A complete transformation of the interior three floors, the largest project of its kind for both the State Fair and University of Minnesota Extension.
For generations, Minnesota's 4-H youth have competed, performed, learned and discovered new passions and built lifelong friendships inside this iconic building. During the 2026 State Fair, step inside to experience it one last time before its transformation begins. Immediately after the fair, construction will start on exciting new spaces designed to inspire the next generation of 4-H'ers, including new stages for performing arts, public speaking and demonstrations; updated areas for STEM activities, entrepreneurship, agricultural education and judging; a teaching kitchen; media studio; and flexible spaces that will support workshops and programming from April through October. The project also includes new elevators and accessibility improvements, enhanced ventilation, upgraded electrical and technology systems, renovated restrooms and dormitory facilities, and other essential improvements. This once-in-a-generation transformation is being made possible through a fundraising campaign led by the Minnesota State Fair Foundation and University of Minnesota Extension.
