• Gate 16 Garden
  • Inspired by America's historic Victory Gardens and the spirit of innovation, resourcefulness and community they fostered, the 60-foot garden at the fair's West End Plaza blends flowers, fruits and vegetables into a vibrant landscape. The garden reflects today's renewed interest in edible landscaping and home gardening, pairing guava, artichokes, tomatoes and peppers with colorful plantings of cannas, verbena, zinnias and other ornamentals.
• Competition Themes
  • Minnesotans’ patriotic talents are on full display in the quilt on-a-stick competition with this year’s theme – 250 Years of American History On-A-Stick – in the Creative Activities Building. Don’t miss the Minnesota State Fair Flower Show in the Agriculture Horticulture Building Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, with exhibitors designing their floral interpretations on the theme America 250.
• History Walking Tour Stops
  • Take a two-mile self-guided stroll through the fairgrounds, gathering history highlights along the way. Among this year’s new stops: The Liberty Bell topiary, which debuted in 1919; among the 6,000 succulents that form the bell, look for “1776” in pink vinca and flowers bursting from the bell’s famous crack. Another patriotic tour stop highlights Teddy Roosevelt’s speech at the Minnesota State Fair in 1901 when he uttered the memorable words, “Speak softly and carry a big stick – you will go far.” Pick up a tour brochure at any of the 12 stops. Complete eight or more stops and collect a prize!
• “George Washington and a Nation of Farmers”
  • This 18-panel exhibition explores George Washington as one of early America’s most innovative agricultural leaders and his belief that a republic of independent farmers was essential to the success of the new nation. Exhibit developed by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association in partnership with the Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Located just east of History & Heritage Center at the West End.
• Military Appreciation Day and Military Bands
  • The State Fair proudly honors the service of our military members and veterans. Highlights of this year’s event on Tuesday, Sept. 1, include a military flyover, veterans recognition programs, performances by the 34th Infantry Division "Red Bull" Band and the USAF Band of Mid-America Shades of Blue, activities and exhibits in Dan Patch Park, and more.
• Veterans Garden
  • Newly renovated and paved to make it accessible and connected to surrounding sidewalks, this special garden is located south of the Agriculture Horticulture Building. Thoughtful elements include a pentagon-shaped stone wall surrounding the flagpole and a striking star-shaped pattern of colored concrete radiating out from the center. Military seals honoring each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and the National Guard, and commemorative plaques recognizing the sacrifice of military members and their families are complemented by vibrant shrubs and flowers and permanent benches. Supported by the Minnesota State Fair Foundation.
