In 1966, saxophonist Jerry Martini and Sly Stone co-founded the first interracial, multi-gender major American band, Sly and the Family Stone. This groundbreaking band reflected and influenced the counterculture of the 1960s and musically laid the foundation for much of the street funk, soul and disco music of the 1970s. The group produced some of the era’s most energizing and compelling songs, including hit singles “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” “Sing a Simple Song,” “I Want to Take You Higher,” “You Can Make It If You Try,” “Hot Fun in the Summertime” and “Stand!” The Family Stone, led by founder Jerry Martini along with Phunne Stone (daughter of Sly Stone and the late Cynthia Robinson), continues the musical legacy keeping true to the original sound and raw funk groove as the band tours the world.
