State Fair veteran's guide to: THE ESSENTIAL FOUR by Zander

CHEESE CURDS
Although it seems to be the fad to sell cheese curds now in restaurants and at other festivals, there's only one place and that's the Minnesota State Fair to get the real deal! Best on the grounds? The Original Deep Fried Cheese Curds (yellow booth on the street).
DEEP FRIED CANDY BAR
Can you really go wrong with this fairly recent new addition? My personal preference: deep fried milky way. It tastes almost like a pancake with powdered sugar, milk chocolate, and caramel. One word: delicious.
THE GIANT SLIDE
This state fair classic is there year after year and brings back memories from being a kid. Always a thrill. Fun to go with family, friends, you name it!
SWEET MARTHA'S COOKIES
Did you think I would leave out Sweet Martha's? Although a bit pricey, these cookies are a staple at the fair. Tip: get them while they're hot. There's a great debate whether they still taste as good at home in the bucket (I happen to think they still do). Of course I couldn't stop without some honorable mentions, after all it is hard to stop at four: pronto pups, mini donuts, crepes, fine arts building, Luigi fries, ye old mill, honey ice cream, scarecrow contest, grandstand, roasted corn, deep fried pickles, fresh french fries, scones, deep fried twinkies, pizza on a stick, orange treat, amateur talent contest, space tower, mac and cheese on a stick, footlong hot dog, and many many more!!

Fastest Footlong
Each year I make a beeline to this footlong stand that is closest to the main entrance, no matter how early in the day. Great way to start out the Fair!
Favorite People Watching
Corner of Carnes and Chambers. Great food nearby in case the scenery gets boring!
Freakiest Favorite Tradition
Visit the Hog Barn to see the winner of the largest hog contest. For us city-slickers this is almost as fun as the Midway!
Funnest Place to Re-Live a Favorite Childhood Moment
Any squirt gun game in the Midway! Now, even if I lose I love to watch my kids win!

Footlong Corndog
Here but once a year! The stand across from the cattle barn is my favorite.
London Broil Sandwich
I heart heart heart this one! With all the toppings sans jalepenos. Butcher Boys has the best by the grandstand.
Double decker Ferris Wheel
I sincerely think this is the creepiest ride at the fair. It goes ridiculously fast for how old and tall it is!
Free Rodeos
It's not a fair without a rodeo. A truly all-American sport and now that it's free anyone can go!

People Watching!
The people watching can't be beat!
Eating
Always find something new to try each year, yet there are 'staples' that are a must each year: Dinos gyros, mini donuts, Pronto Pups, cheese on a stick, Fudge Puppies, Tacos, strawberry malts, etc....
Hort/Ag building
Love the colors, sights, smells in this building. The fair was founded on Minnesota's agricultural diversity, and it's great to see the variety of Minnesota's bounty!
Bandshell Entertainment
I have seen many shows here. What a great way to spend an evening!
