My dad always entered the stained glass competition every year and came away with many blue ribbons. Once I learned the craft, I began to enter and was thrilled to win my first blue ribbon!
When I was a kid my girlfriend lived about 3 blocks from the fair. Every year I would stay with her during fair week. At night we could hear the grandstand shows through her window. I still remember hearing the Supremes concert back in the 1960's!
Many great memories of the Royal American Shows of the past, the double ferris wheel rides at night, winning huge stuffed animals, and introducing my kids to the midway and arcade games when they were young!
Needless to say, the food choices get better and better every year. In fact, this year my son is working for a new vendor who will be selling hot apple dumplings! YUM.
The State Fair; It's Not Just for the Food by Kathy Fischer
The Sights, Sounds, Smells
The State Fair marks a place in time for me - a transition from the heat of August to the cool, crisp days of fall. The sounds of kids laughing; the Mighty Midway screams among the blaring music from the rides; the parades; and the occasional tree toad singing out from the great trees that line the streets, are some of the sounds I look forward to every year. And who doesn't enjoy the smells of fried onions and hot dogs, chocolate chip cookies and hamburgers permeating the air as one makes their way throughout the streets. And lastly, the great anticipation for the next Minnesota State Fair to return once again when summer fades into autumn.
Where else in one building can one find such a vast array of information - from where to attend college to information on your health!
Corn at the Corn Roast - Hot & Buttered!
The greatest treat at the fair - don't have to schuck it, cook it, salt or butter it - and when you have "mowed" down the last row, it's also recyclable!!
This is a must have, always great - with mustard or ketchup!
