I don't think I need to elaborate, but I discovered cheese curds at the Fair when I came to Minneapolis for college in 1999. Still on my "must eat" list every year.
Take a Newbie
I love bringing people who have never been to the Fair before--friends, my brother, other MN transplants like me, and this year, my parents! (They're from Michigan.)
I love trying new things at the Fair - alligator, hotdish on a stick or deep fried Oreos. Haven't decided what this year's new thing will be yet....
This year, I'm going to my first Grand Stand show (Journey!), but I love watching the free shows, too (Talent Competition, high dive, skate park or a 4H musical).
rides by Carl Swanson (age 7)
the giant slide
I like the giant slide because it is fast.
I like the skyride because I can see the whole fair.
the mirror maze
I like the mirror maze because it has a challenge.
the river raft
I like the river raft because you get wet.
Carmen the fair-goers fab four by Carmen Shoberg
You have to ride the giant slide no matter what your age. It's also a great place to rest on a bench in the shade as you watch sliders from all walks of life go down the big yellow slide. You can also enjoy some country music and a yo- yo show (Dazzeling Dave) if your there at the right time.
State Fair Museum
It's a great walk through exibit for new fair goers or veteran fair folks. It's fun to see how the grounds have changed and how the grandstand acts have come from horse racing to awesome outdoor concerts, come in and learn something new.
Creative Arts building
The heart of what the state fair is all about, canned goods, baked goods and handcrafted items from all over the state. We love to come through this building each year and look at what awesome things people can cook, back, can, sew, paint, carve, etc. Fun for all ages!
Cosater's Beer Garden
Best place to rest tired legs, grab a cold beer and watch the country kids meet the city kids as they walk into the melting pot we call the Mid Way. The best corner to people watch, get yourself an old tilt-a-whirl seat in the shade, and let life at the fair entertain you.
Carmen's (been going my whole life) picks by Carmen Shoberg
The giant slide is a great place to meet family and friends, (because everyone knows where it is) then all take a ride down the slide together - or just watch the kids go down.
Love to see the county kids/people and their livestock. Take the barn tours they are informational and fun and don't take too long.
State Fair Museum
Located in Heritage square, it's a little well kept peek into the Fair's history, learn something new, marvel at all the grandstand acts that have come through, get a load of the costumes and hair do's from the past......
Beer Garden's in a tilt-a-whirl seat
Go sit and relax with a beer or pop and watch the city meet the county - best place to people watch, you have your county folks coming from the barns and the city folks heading for the midway - have a seat be ready to be entertained by some GOOD people watching!
