Original Cheese Curds
Absolute must have! Always our first stop at the fair. Has to be the Original Cheese Curds - they are the ONLY Cheese curds worth trying!
All you can drink Milk
Best deal at the fair! Nice ice cold milk on a hot day - can't get much better!
Foot long Hot dog
How can you go to the fair without eating a foot long really?!
Malt from the Dairly Building
A classic fair staple! This is what the fair is all about!
State Fair veteran's guide to: THE ESSENTIAL FOUR by Zander
Although it seems to be the fad to sell cheese curds now in restaurants and at other festivals, there's only one place and that's the Minnesota State Fair to get the real deal! Best on the grounds? The Original Deep Fried Cheese Curds (yellow booth on the street).
DEEP FRIED CANDY BAR
Can you really go wrong with this fairly recent new addition? My personal preference: deep fried milky way. It tastes almost like a pancake with powdered sugar, milk chocolate, and caramel. One word: delicious.
THE GIANT SLIDE
This state fair classic is there year after year and brings back memories from being a kid. Always a thrill. Fun to go with family, friends, you name it!
SWEET MARTHA'S COOKIES
Did you think I would leave out Sweet Martha's? Although a bit pricey, these cookies are a staple at the fair. Tip: get them while they're hot. There's a great debate whether they still taste as good at home in the bucket (I happen to think they still do). Of course I couldn't stop without some honorable mentions, after all it is hard to stop at four: pronto pups, mini donuts, crepes, fine arts building, Luigi fries, ye old mill, honey ice cream, scarecrow contest, grandstand, roasted corn, deep fried pickles, fresh french fries, scones, deep fried twinkies, pizza on a stick, orange treat, amateur talent contest, space tower, mac and cheese on a stick, footlong hot dog, and many many more!!
Four things I do when I go to the Fair by Brenden Nickels
If I go in the morning, this is my first thing. I can get a regular traditional breakfast at one of the church dining halls, a quick fast-food style breakfast, or just a bag of mini donuts to get my day of walking, talking, and eating going on a good start.
There is nothing better than walking to and from place to place and just enjoying the atmosphere of the fellow fairgoers, and taking in the sights and sounds that are around you. Of course, if you get tired, you can rest by sitting down on a bench or taking a trolley ride.
It seems like every day at 2:00, everyone just stops what they are doing, and just watches. I enjoy the different marching bands that pass by, as well as the other stuff like the dairy princesses, floats, and last but not least, the big Minnesota Beef Expo cow.
The all-you-can-drink milk stand
This is the classic ending to my day at the Fair. Sometimes with a cone or bucket of Sweet Martha's cookies, I usually have 3 glasses, 2 regular and 1 chocolate. However, if I am going to a concert at the Grandstand, I have to have it before I go to the Grandstand, since it closes before the concert gets out.
Can't leave until I have these 4 things by Abby Rodriguez (& kids)
Our first stop right away in the morning...
But only from the Mouse Hole.
From the dairy barn people. Usually an afternoon treat.
Sweet Martha's cookies and the all you can drink milk
Ok, so technically that's 5, but we get a cone of cookies and then walk over to the all you can drink milk booth and sit on the curb to eat/drink them together. This is one of our last stops of the day before we head for home.
