  1. Cheese Curds
I don't think I need to elaborate, but I discovered cheese curds at the Fair when I came to Minneapolis for college in 1999. Still on my "must eat" list every year.
  2. Take a Newbie
I love bringing people who have never been to the Fair before--friends, my brother, other MN transplants like me, and this year, my parents! (They're from Michigan.)
  3. New Food
I love trying new things at the Fair - alligator, hotdish on a stick or deep fried Oreos. Haven't decided what this year's new thing will be yet....
  4. Entertainment
This year, I'm going to my first Grand Stand show (Journey!), but I love watching the free shows, too (Talent Competition, high dive, skate park or a 4H musical).

Four Favorite Years by Sara

Category: Miscellaneous

  1. 1989 ... NKOTB at the Grandstand
I was only 12. My mom took my best friend and I to see the New Kids on the Block at the Grandstand. Tiffany & Tommy Page were the opening acts. I'll never forget the experience... My first *rock* concert.
  2. 199-something... The Teen Years
Every summer my church's youth-group went to the fair. We had "adult" chaperones & we were all grouped with 3 or 4 friends and an adult... My b/f/f and I always spent the time ditching our chaperone & looking for cute boys (that we would never EVER dare talk to.). Amazingly - the chaperone always found us.
  3. 2002 - Weight Watchers and the Fair
The ultimate oxymoron? My hubby & I were determined to enjoy the fair while being faithful to our Weight-loss program. We printed out a list of fair-foods and their approximate W.W. points-value (do NOT ask about the cheese-curds). Nothing like sharing one Strawberry Malt at the Dairy Barn! We did it! Stayed in points (& continued to loose almost 200 pounds together that year)
  4. 2006 - Doctor's Permission
I was 8 1/2 months pregnant during the 2006 fair. My husband and mother would not allow me to go without the permission of my doctor. Doc gave me the green light and said "Watch what you eat & take it slow... rest often".

Creating Family Traditions by MSF Staffer - LLH

Category: Family Fun

  1. Same food every year!
Family traditions are the glue that binds one generation to another. They give parents and kids something to look forward to each year. Like other families, we have holiday traditions but we also have our State Fair traditions that include the following food every year: pronto pups, french fries with 1919 rootbeer, mini donuts, a bucket of Sweet Martha's cookies with a glass of cold milk from the Midwest Dairy Association, salted nutroll, corn on the cob and a pork chop on a stick.
  2. Sean Emery - funny guy who juggles!
Sean Emery performs at the Family Fair at Baldwin Park every day of the Fair and it is a huge hit for all ages - each year we can't wait to see him juggle, ride a unicycle, make us laugh and do his 'hat sequence' to close his show!
  3. Amateur Talent Contest Finals
On Sunday before Labor Day we always go to the Amateur Talent Contest Finals - free! We meet friends and family in the exact same seating section. We take turns going to get food (a cream puff is a must!) We watch an evening of great entertainment and then ooooo and aaaahhhh as we watch the fireworks right above us. Then we head out for our State Fair Four #4...
  4. Space Tower at night
At the end of our fun-filled day, we make our way to the Space Tower. We take a seat to rest our weary feet. As it rotates around, we take turns pointing out all the things we did that day on the fairgrounds below us and then we look out beyond to point out the capitol, downtown Minneapolis, where the kid's school is located and a little to the right of that is our house. The lights flicker as we quietly get off thinking about next year when we get to do it all over again and maybe add something new to our State Fair family traditions!
