my must haves/see by Megan Warn
They are as amazing as the funny/silly man who owns the cart. Pickle dogs are a yummy piece of pastrami with cream cheese smeared all over it and a pickle on top, rolled up for easy consumption! I eat three every time I go to the fair.
strawberries and cream
that's it, just whole berries and cool whip. I could get it at home but it tastes better with a spork! Don't forget to whip a sporkfull at your sister!
cute cute piglets and chicks and cows, sheep and whatever else is entering the world that day. need I say more? oh! sometimes you get to touch them! don't forget to sanitize!
Keep and eye out for lost flip flops on the tops of buildings and don't forget to smooch your sweetheart half way though!

Climbing the Fire Tower
I managed to attend the fair for 25+ years before discovering the fire tower outside the DNR building last year. Great view of the fairgrounds, plus a dude shows you how our forests were once protected by fire spotters with a compass and a walkie talkie.
State Fair Bingo
I make Bingo cards, hand them out to my fellow fair-goers, and see who can mark 5 spaces first. We're watching for things like, Favre Jersey, Guy with a mullet, lady yanking her kid by the arm, Rascal scooter, shirt with fresh food stain, kid on a leash
Before computer screen pixels were created, people had to make their own out of Minnesota-grown grains and seeds. And make them they did! The tradition of arranging seed and grain pixels into works of art continues today, and I cannot wait to see what crops up this year!
Baby animals being born
At the Miracle of Birth building. You may see a birth miracle that looks more like a bloody massacre, but if you can look at a day-old lamb without melting, you are not human.
best kept secrets at the fair by Lisa De Krey
Breakfasts at the Salem Lutheran Church stand. Mom always said "start your day with a good breakfast." It's not just good at Salem--it's GREAT! Tucked in the northeast corner of the fair, their mouth watering pancakes are THE BEST in the world. They’re made from scratch recipe will keep you coming back for more. CAUTION: highly addictive
Does FREE fit your budget?
Nothing is free anymore...but it is at the fair. My #1 State Fair Four is the free evening entertainment. I've sang along with Minnesota favorites Tonic Sol-Fa, laughed so hard my belly hurt at Sami Dare--hypnotist extraordinaire, enjoyed big name music artists and cheered on homegrown talent in the annual talent competition.
Get in line and buy the best milk shake at the fair. (pineapple is my favorite!) Enjoy your shake while watching the likeness of a Minnesota dairy princess being carved into an 80 pound block of butter. From National Geographic to state and local news, this attraction captures attention.
The annual milk run is held on a gorgeous Sunday morning on opening weekend of the fair. Residents come out to cheer you on and enjoy the beautiful neighborhoods surrounding the State Fair. If that's not good enough, your registration gets you a place in the race, a ticket into the fair, a t-shirt, a free milk shake and a variety of other free items.

Sunday Before The Fair Starts
If you compete in baking, this is your day. Get there early, try to be first, but the same 2 ladies always beat me there. Somehow it is always chilly that morning, as we wait outside Creative Activities Building for the door to open. Oooh and aaah at what others have baked, talk about who won what last year. Next few days will be waiting to see if winners are up on website - did I win a ribbon? Excitement building because the FAIR is just a few days away.
Cheese curds -my all-time favorite, but so many other favorites too- diet is out the window for the duration. Corn fritters. Fudge puppy. Roasted corn. Cream puffs. Sweet Martha’s. Milkshakes. French Fries. Minnekabob. By the time I finish my old favorites, it's hard to think to try something new.
The fair after dark is magical- lights of the midway, sounds of music, great people watching - seems like the strangest people come out after dark. Even though it's crowded, it's always a happy crowd.
Which do I like best? Sheep? Goats? Ducks? Chickens? Rabbits? Love the horse shows, especially when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are here.
