CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

The Creative Activities Department of the Minnesota State Fair presents an annual exhibition of the finest needlework, handcrafts, baking and canning that Minnesota has to offer. Participation is limited to Minnesota residents. In 2014, more than 2,000 participants exhibited 7,500 items (more than 2,800 in baking and special contests alone).

  • Needlecraft - linens, quilts, rugs, crocheted and knitted items.
  • Garment Making - competitions for junior exhibitors and adults.
  • Handcrafts - woodworking, models, metalwork, weaving, free hand painting, decorative crafts, dolls & soft toys.
  • Collections - stamp collections, postcard frames, creative collections & scrapbooking.
  • Work of Senior Citizens - competitions for senior citizens in needlecraft and handcrafts.
  • Baked Products - breads, cakes and cookies.
  • Special Contests - part of Baked Products
  • Canned & Preserved Foods - competitions for amateur fruit growers including, but not limited to, apples, plums, grapes, pears, and peaches; and amateur wine producers including red, white, and rose grape table wines, apple, cherry or other berry wine.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND RULES FOR ENTRY:

The Creative Activities premium book is available annually online the first Monday in May. For the most detailed information about delivery times, return of exhibit times, premiums, requirements and more, view the premium book.

REGISTRATION: By entering online, your entry tags and forms will be completed and ready for you when you deliver your exhibits. Online registration must by completed by 4:30 p.m., Aug. 11. If you miss the online deadline, exhibits in Needlecraft, Garment Making, Work of Senior Citizens, Handcrafts, and Collections categories may be registered in person on date(s) of delivery.

In the Canned & Preserved Foods categories, only USDA approved methods of food preservation (pressure canning or hot water bath) are accepted. You may view the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning at:

ONLINE REGISTRATION: Opens the first Monday in May; closes Aug. 11 at 4:30 p.m.

Registration is required for entries in the Baked Products, Special Contests, and Canned & Preserved Foods categories and must be completed online or postmarked by 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 11.

BAKED PRODUCTS AND CANNED & PRESERVED FOOD ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IF NOT REGISTERED PRIOR TO CLOSING DATE.

    • See individual contest rules for delivery dates; admission to the fair is the responsibility of the exhibitor if dates fall during the run of the Minnesota State Fair.

RETURN OF EXHIBITS:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1-7 p.m. (No articles returned before 1 p.m.)
  • Thursday, Sept. 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
